Remko Scha
Machine Guitars
★★★
More for those who are willing to take the human component out of their music, and more or less listen to machines. This stands out more like a haunting art piece than anything else. Each piece is set up differently but it all comes back around.
It does carry the sound of the no-wave movement during the same time. Borrowing the guitar minimalisms of people like Glenn Branca and Rhys Chatham. But this is different: there were no players on this record. Only Scha had arranged the machines to play these guitars completely on their own.
While this does make for some interesting sounds, I think a record doesn't totally capture the concept and only a live viewing would. Still it's something different and worth a listen. And also, by taking the human part out of music has created an album in which there are no mistakes in the playing.
The human faults and errors in what would be the strumming of guitars is missing. There are different moods or feelings trying to be displayed in each song, but it seems half done. Like a machine trying to imitate humans, but there's always the details that can give it away. And I like searching for those.
