Mary O'Hara
Songs of Ireland
★★★½
The simple folk singing and harp playing can go a long way. I've seen many call her a proto-Joanna Newsom, and while that may be true in many ways, it's also the furthest thing from that. There's some variation in this but not really enough for my taste.
It is great to hear some traditional Irish singing, as well as just plain English. Some of these serve as lullabies or folk songs and fairy tales, and for the most part it provides the aesthetic well.
It's silly and whimsical at times, yet this can give way to serious topics and songs. This emotional variation is very welcome, I just wish this was also reflected within the song structure as well. If you don't pay much attention it can all sound the same after a while.
That being said, I prefer the jolly and vivid songs she so eagerly sings here. The uptempo and playful nature of them make you feel like a kid again. Something about lost innocence which won't return I guess.
