Christoph De Babalon
If You're Into It, I'm Out of It

★★½

Ok sure there's enough drum and bass to go around forever, but none like this. Looking at the cover and title I was kind of put off, my actual mistake for thinking that. Imagine taking RDJ's SAW II and the Richard D James album and mashing them together. Even that actually wouldn't be that close to touching this.

This is what I've always wanted drum and bass to reach towards; a sort of melancholic and surreal depiction of urban life and loneliness. But when you start this off it sounds more like a dark ambient record. There are a few other tracks that give a similar feel too. But I think it just helps expand the atmosphere and depth he was going for on this.

The breaks here are ruthless. One after the other without even a slight concern for your well-being. They’re stripped down to the molecule too, no remnants of what might’ve been some jazzy or funky breaks. They’re just filled with edges that can cut you like a hot knife through butter.

The whole thing works seamlessly too, there’s no bumps or hiccups along the way. It all flows through this industrial soot covered landscape which only appears during the darkest and loneliest hours of the day. And I thank Christoph for providing such an album.
