PJ Harvey
Is This Desire?

★★★½

Although I haven't really explored a lot of Harvey's discography, the albums I have listened to prove to be stylistically different with almost a single theme throughout. This is the complete opposite of that, and it works so fucking well. It feels like a thin ocean containing everything that's ever existed, and it's covering a flat, dry desert just barely. She incorporates so many different vocal styles and musical genres that it makes this pretty difficult to pin down. Also side note "The Wind" in its first five seconds is exactly the same instrumentation as "Sunny Side Up" by Omid on Beneath the Surface. There's such a mix of emotions on here too but no matter what they are, it's haunting. And there definitely is this general layer of darkness and mystery throughout. She does take some influence from her previous albums but they are only really starting points. This is probably something like taking almost every genre in the UK during the 90s and putting it together in the brilliant Polly Jean style.
