Lali Puna
Scary World Theory

★★★½

A fairly thoughtful and cohesive poppy, minimalist, and clean electronic project. Pretty close to being in the Stereolab vein of things, but it lacks the krautrock or prog aspects that Stereolab holds close and dear. The vocals on this are quite calm, fuzzed and a bit clunky. A lot of it is reminiscent of some spoken word, but it does appeal to me. Especially the contrast between this vocal style and that of the whirling and mechanical instrumentation. The mechanical aspect of it however, is more organic . Like a self sufficient machine which simply exists to compliment the true organic elements. This album is also pretty consistent; there might be a slight dip in the middle but it doesn't cause too much damage. Also surprised that this came out in 2001, pretty forward thinking. I could see a similar album come out today; sort of makes you think about how much our electronic pop scene has progressed.
