Graham Lambkin
Amateur Doubles
★★★★
Graham Lambkin is a name I've come to recognize recently, having only listened to Salmon Run and The Breadwinner. Both of which are extremely unique to me and have made me think about the whole concept of music in a way that hasn't really crossed my mind.
I listened to a podcast interview with him a while ago and it was quite interesting the way he positioned even the interview itself; there were moving pieces and noise in the background the whole time almost as if he was creating a piece within the interview setting.
Reading up on the context of this album is useful as well; it was a vinyl release with a picture of his family in the car. This is the setting this album was recorded in and while listening you can really sense the constraint and auditory experience one has while listening to music in a car. This does evoke the feeling of starting a long road trip, choosing synth based 70s music which sounds like some Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream albums.
There are certain moments that drag you into reality, mostly in the second song for me. Whether it be kids in the back making noise or the sound of fiddling with CD cases in your lap choosing what to play next. It all makes this an uncomfortably relatable album to listen to.
