Cecil Taylor Unit
Spring of Two Blue-J's
★★★
Split into two sections of this live performance, Cecil Taylor stands out, but unfortunately this record doesn't as much. Don't get me wrong, this isn't bad, in fact it's pretty, but there's not much here that you can't find somewhere else. And in that case it'll most likely be recorded to a higher quality and provide more content. The first side is my favorite, it's just some solo Cecil playing. I really do think that is where he is allowed to shine the most. His playing here is very much like a slinky, compressing and expanding as it progresses. The second side is what really drags down this performance. While there is no doubt that Jimmy Lyons and Taylor are well represented, the rhythm section falls somewhat flat. I know Cyrille is talented, but he's somewhat not fully here for me. And Sirone the bassist isn't even audible until the end. Making my way through Taylor's catalog will take a while, but I know greatness lies ahead. As Taylor's history has shown me already.
